“Reverse Opinions” a poem for Rebel Yell

You call me angry
But you, have a million ways to hate me
So this isn’t anger / this is my confused face.

these lines on my forehead are
glass ceilings / eulogies / sexism and sermons
these lines are 400 year old collection notices
these lines are me not wanting to compete for every corner of my existence
this isn’t anger.
this is proper placement privilege
this is / been here    done that    and steady grinding
this is you mistaking me swallowing whole fruit for breasts
this is my lipstick protecting my smile when I kiss the moon at night
it’s not magical all days
sometimes I can’t abracadabra away feeling… “other”
sometimes it’s real survival tactics needed
these lines remind me where I hid bail money
where I’m safe to unbraid my fears and wash my past
this is an emotion you can’t repeat
cause you damn sure duplicate everything else about me
but this isn’t anger.
this is for my pushed back knuckles from
fighting traffic, hunting for low gas prices, scrimmaging through too ripe produce in my local grocery store,  you know / regular stuff
this isn’t anger
this is me demanding you stop displaying to the world there are exceptions to me being human
being woman / being protected /  be-ing loving / be-ing loved.
this is I don’t want the crime solved 30 years from now when the killer is probably in my breathing space

I’m not supposed to be offended when you call me angry?
But you,   -have a million ways to hate me
this isn’t anger.
this is my stay ready face. – by Nikki Skies for “Rebel Yell” on BET.com

Allegiance, a poem for “Rebel”

Allegiance.

like rusted barbwire
nothing gets past me
over me

Never Bow
nothing can get through to me
but your mixtures of smiles and advice
and now, that can only touch me through rain / Mama I miss you

my doubt outruns ruined panty hose
going back and forth like a father to work / a mother to prayer

Write a song for yourself
one that can march
when your walk is crooked
and your back is misguided

A song of allegiance
that can speak
when your twisted tongue is to capacity with
blues and sours and thorns

A song that pledges allegiance
to bodies that abandon couches and beds
but comfort the concrete slabs of
Oakland / Ferguson / Baltimore / New York

Blow the horn
Live to tell

bang, bang (a poem by Nikki Skies for “Rebel Yell”)

Bang!
Yellow plus blue makes green
Like blood on blue makes
mean
times in these streets

even meaner when the oath
is covered and smothered to protect promotions and pension plans
instead of people’s freedom and hard worked land
bang!

You can get a round of drinks from co-workers
faster than the truth
or you might have better luck tracing my family tree
before the start of slavery
and that is practically impossible
so you keep asking
you keep tracing
you keep pacing with the sun’s shadows
and euphoric mist
while these bodies keep transitioning
bang!
energy moving on
but the control and power staying the same
I remain
ssssstuck on justice
a yearning that repeats like a speech impediment.
Got me  / living life like a suicide note found
every morning at 7a.m.
bang! bang!
can’t remember anything else but staying steady,
ready / like mother’s equipping
their children with breakfast bars   backpacks    and  dash cams

bang! bang! bang! bang!

statue of liberty standing pretty holding a flame
that’s never lit my community
liberty bell never rang loud enough to level the playing field
So I’ll keep my ear to the streets and listen for the drums.
read the sweaty faces of over-worked people like /maps
interpret the colors in the swaying skirts
and the signals from framed smoke flowing from barbq pits

grant me the serenity to courageously stand oak tree tall and the wisdom to put a plan into action
I’m getting the last word!
Me against the world

bang!

Yellow plus blue makes green.
Like blood on blue makes /
mean
times in these streets.
