SHE CHRONICLES: Absent from Your Work

While studying film in grad school, a lot of my professors had taken on the “grassroots/indie” approach to their art and influenced the students as well.  Meaning, if you want it on the big screen you have to execute guerilla style film making and do everything yourself.  So being a writer and actor, when I first moved to Los Angeles, my natural inking was to write a play, cast it, direct it, produce it, market it, etc.

For me, that robbed me of the time I needed to be creative.  As my luck would have it, I went to a book reading for Ntozake Shange and she said something that saved me from a lot of future stress.  To paraphrase her, ‘write something so good, others will want to perform it, buy it and/or produce it.’  So after studying arts all through high school, undergrad and grad school, I found myself back in the library reading the timeline and art of some of my Sheros.

I sought to study the greats and determine how they were able to create timeless art that others yearned to bring to life and share with their perspective audiences.  That is my mission.  Especially with my play, “Hope’s Return”.

SHE CHRONICLES: “Almost a Lamentation” by Nikki Skies for ‘Rebel Yell’

rebelyellowbckground

I hope you have been able to watch this season of “Rebel”!  As I shared a few months ago, I am the writer of the poetry for the show.  The lead actress parlays as a poet and I write her metaphors, analogies, similies and such 🙂

I also write for the online series updates, “Rebel Yell”.  Here is the first poem recited by the lead actress portrayed by the amazingly talented, Danielle Mone Truitt.  Enjoy,

“Almost a Lamentation”

Hi All,

I got a call last June that this new television, Rebel, needed another writer. The lead character parlays as a poet in her pasttime and they needed someone to write all the poetry for the series and the lead actor.  I TOOK THE GIG!  Make sure you tune in!  All the poetry was written by yours truly 🙂

Full Circle, a full moon

While my first writing love is poetry, my first on stage love is the theatre.  My BA is in theatre from Grambling State University and I performed all through high school and college in various genres.  I ultimately moved to Los Angeles with the dual mission to become an actress and writer.  As I continued to write, I fell in love with the dance of words in poetry and began to perform as a performance poet.  The rest is history. I’m not sure if I chose poetry or if poetry chose me but we damn sure got married!

My full circle story… June of 2016 I received a call that an upcoming television show needed a writer of poetry for the series because the lead character parlayed as a poet in her downtime.  The show, “Rebel”, is backed by executive producer and oscar nominated/emmy award winning director, John Singleton.  Without hesitation, I accepted!  And a few weeks later, I was told that I was being written in as the lead actresses’ poetry rival.  Having not prayed on being an actress in years, they were being answered some 15 years later.  So off to Los Angeles I went…

2017-01-05_05.42.15.jpg  Two of my poems had already been accepted and taped for the series so I was showing up as not only an actor for an episode but a writer.  MIND BLOWING!!!  I was so nervous that my lines would not stick in my memory.  I was so nervous, I shut down and was totally shy and quiet on set.  But I was there and had to perform.

expired?

My flight was delayed at the airport so I’m sitting here with an extra 4 hours to do nothing. Then it hits me… I could go over my lines. Years, years of writing, doing theatre, traveling the country performing poetry or speaking to young writers and now I’m on my way to shoot my scenes as a co-star on Rebel. The new tv show that debuts in March on BET.

Dreams expire like milk… ONLY IF YOU DON’T USE IT IN TIME! Artists, stay ready and keep creating your art. Soon enough, soon.  ☺
