Many people will read this and immediately begin to think from a religious perspective and ignore the transformation that can be experienced from this mantra.

The politics of religion is about mind and crowd control, not freedom or spiritual growth.  And perhaps this is where the frustration begins.  Instead of viewing the glass as half empty people will view it as constantly starting over.

Those hard times are where you are burning to rise.  Where you should allow yourself to come undone.  Only to give birth to yourself again.  Think differently… think spiritually.

Gathered Around Fire (a prose piece for roux makers)

sankofa1

I was cold.  I didn’t know too much about The Fire Next Time (James Baldwin) or that it could be easily identified as the return of the spirit of the movement.

The presence of our ancestors to re-connect the seven sciences that we all represented.

I just know that of the several bonfires that appeared    /I chose the one closest to my home.  A few others had come to get warm.

We dared to stare down the center of this chemical process to identify what was causing the combustion.  And nothing was there.  Not with the naked eye at least.                                                                         It was simply a fire and I was cold.

when does sugar become sweet? by nikki skies

from the root? from perception? from the experience? when does sugar become sweet?

For me it is from the experience. And it is probably this for most others since we are not physically sugar canes. Be that, when does art become good? When is a love affair over? When is enough enough? When am I a bad parent?

These are all boundaries I have created for myself. My own little box I keep painted and maintained to look like my body with smooth brown skin. Perhaps like my mother felt when rearing my sister, brother and I, she was doing the best she could. She was doing what she knew and felt best at that time. And at times her decisions were based on her personal needs and I encountered moments of disappointment. However, what made me feel this way? The root, the perception or the experience?

It is all.

My oldest niece lives with associate disorder. (I have accepted this is the nice way of saying early stages of schizophrenia.) She dissociates herself with authority. She is bold and impulsive and therefore dissociates herself with effect. I am her guardian and have experienced bouts of fear and anger and sadness with this realization. Even though my sweetheart is an honor roll student in middle school, she does not understand these conversations I have with her. I can tell by the narrowing of her eyes. She just knows she is being scolded for “something”. When does her sugar become sweet? At her root? Her perception? Her experience? Is there truly an impact for her to acquaint with when she, like everyone else, is simply living out her karma?

Fear is the unknown. And like any parent, I send myself in frenzied panic attacks over her future. But when free from ostentation, I can empty my mind and live with her sugar being sweet under all three possibilities. Therefore declaring her a whole person.

Keep Yo Motha Freakin’ Chakras Open by Ebony Janice

I started masturbating when I was four years old. Well… let me start by saying, I was inappropriately touched at four years old. Then this inappropriate thing was awakened in my small child body and I was a pro at touching myself before 1st grade. I struggled with pornography from preteen years through my adult years and was very sexually active in my early 20‘s. I would later be diagnosed with Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) in my mid-20’s and suffer with irregular hemorrhaging well into my late 20’s.

I shared all of this with an ex once and he started talking to me about balancing my chakras. The first thing I thought about was electricity in the body and how we use to rub our hands together really fast and touch each other to send a tiny electrical zap into the body of our playmates. However I never thought about how that electricity impacted the whole self.

Together We Made the Sun

pic of star

Years ago after a spoken word show in Los Angeles, I remember sitting in the green room and talking with the other artists.  One of the artists presented the possibility of the earth being a star.  The only reason it is not identified as one is because it doesn’t emit light like most other stars do.  She continued to pose the question, “what if our sole responsibility is to express so sincerely we enabled the earth to shine brighter than the sun?”

When I saw this photo, I instantly remembered that question.  What if, together we made the sun?

Article: Why Being Near The Ocean Can Make You Calmer And More Creative

Well this isn’t shocking being that our bodies are 50-75% water. Everyone’s body is controlled by the moon’s vibrational pull on the bodies of water on the earth. Great read!

some days i feel like, Goddess Auset

auset

tenacious and stout would describe her love for him. or even, whole. this love predates all the great love stories. the kind that makes great movies and transcends love beyond the ordinary. their love defined truth, justice and righteousness.

it was not the contained love in a “faithful” box. in fact, it was not faithful. it evaded being self served and accepted deliverance for another being. it is the reciprocal love that most people say they deserve. There is no complete inscription of their relationship but they all seem to speak that Auset and her love, Ausar, had a legendary love.

The land of Egypt succeeded in enterprise under the leadership of Ausar. He provided laws and education and taught the people the art of agriculture. Auset championed the interest of his reign and they were both highly respected as rulers. When Ausar was murdered by his brother, Auset took to the land of Egypt to gather his body parts as he had been dismembered. She is primarily noted wearing a throne headdress to illustrate her representation of power. Auset is often called the Goddess of motherhood, magic and fertility.

Later in life I’ve realized how important it is to continue to wear my crown even in relationships. It is important to continue to revere my purpose in spite of who I am in a relationship with. This actualization came with maturity as I began to re-define what my societal constraints determined for me.

I have yet to feel safe and supported with my confidence to be an intelligent and sensual woman in a relationship. But when I observe the relationships around me that have survived both people remaining individuals, and not committing to the “relationship”, I know it can be accomplished. Some days I feel like Goddess Auset and breath fire and light for my love to come.

common sense religion

“Give it up to the Lord”, literally has some people just stop.  They stop asking, stop seeking, stop dreaming and wait for someone to knock on their door!  Or perhaps they will meet this person at the pharmacy or at a traffic light.  The opportunity will arrive via their AOL account or during a heated argument.  As much as religion strengthens some people, it also weakens.  The dictation of the scripture can encourage some to stop thinking or being creative.  It also encourages them to follow the same path and stories as the scriptures and not take a chance on that road less traveled so they can mimic someone else’s blessing.

The common sense behind religion is what I compare to Harriett Tubman’s quote, she “could’ve freed more slaves if they knew they were slaves…”  If more people considered religion as the noun and spirituality as the action, we would have a broader definition of freedom.  A closer connection to the sun.

Some Things I am Convinced Of

I am convinced of my ancestors effortless being of linking the seven sciences.

(Grammar, Arithmetic, Rhetoric, Dialectic, Geometry, Astronomy and Music)

I am convinced my ancestors altruistic nature taught this ingenuity to everyone else on the earth

I am convinced once it was duplicated the magic just wasn’t the same… it never had the same exact medicinal results

I am convinced this angered the foreign thieves

I am convinced the foreign thieves feared our wedded power if we were to ever reconnect the power of It All

so we were taught to compete in a way that destroyed families/communities/dynasties

we were distracted with results while the formulas to create now became our quest

and this continued through captivity

but we began to communicate through drums and quilts and songs

and then some of us were chosen to eat and… we were separated again

something happened in the 50’s/60’s where we began to communicate through song and dance and sermons and theatre

and then some of us were chosen to eat and… we were separated again

and then we created a culture of hip hop with music and dance and graffiti and religion and clothes

and then some of us were chosen to eat and… we were separated again

and then poetry began to crawl then walk and ran from corner to corner of the world

and we met at coffee houses and corners and churches

and then some were chosen to eat and… we were separated again

I am convinced the spirits of our ancestors will garner enough energy to once again present an opportunity for us to reconnect ourselves as One

and this time my dear Artists,

We Must Feed Each Other until we get the formula just right!

We must bite the hands of the presenter and

re-member Ourselves.

I am convinced of this.
