Wisdom Born Mamas sew star, sun, earth, heart shaped
patterns on
quilts to warm babies
and free souls
hearing from the wind when to hang ’em
high on the clothes line
Before rooster crow / before master know
patterns on quilts mapped out which way to go

**Dedicated to the courage of Harriet Tubman and the slaves and quakers that made quilts and hung them to slyly map the way to freedom**
from the poetry book, Pocket Honey, Wind & Hips
I got that one 🙂
Reblogged this on The Poetry Channel.
Wonderful piece, Nikki.
Thanks! And I appreciate the reblog!
Thank you Nikki for this post on Harriet Tubman My greatest SHERO.
I knew you were going to comment on this one! I knew it 🙂
Amen! This is a wonderful piece. When I worked in the prison environment, I selected a children’s book for the “Father Read” program. It was “Follow the Drinking Gourd”. It was disallowed as the inmates might use the big dipper for the purpose of escape. REALLY??? God forbid that sing “Wade In The Water”!
I’m familiar with that book! Really?? Use the big dipper? Wow…
YES!!! Well done!
I love this poem! I can see the imagery even without the image.
Thank you! I’m so glad you like it.
