  1. Every time I hear this poem, I think of the episode of “A Different World” where Whitley & Kim are at odds over having the image of “mammy” at a dorm dedication ceremony and Kim uses this poem as a part of the performance piece. Good video!

  2. I totally agree! I tend not to memorize my poems. I want to spend my time writing, not memorizing what I’ve already written – after all, what’s a book for?

  3. Have loved her poetry since long before seeing her in person at Adelphi university in 1979. She read, My House. Still one of my favorites.
